Police arrested 14 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Aug. 4 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 726 DUI arrests compared with 765 during the same period last year, a 5.1 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona officers arrested nine motorists while Puna officers arrested three, according to police. Ka’u and South Kohala officers arrested one driver in each district.
There have been 949 major accidents so far this year compared with 840 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.
So far this year, there were eight traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 61.9 percent. To date, three fatalities were related to drugs only and two to a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
