Hawaii Learning Resource will offer a workshop for kindergarten through 12th-grade educators presented by Kavita Rao. “Universal Design for Learning: Strategies and Tools to Engage Diverse Learners” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School, 64-1043 Hiiaka St. in Waimea.
Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that gives all individuals equal opportunities to learn. Workshop participants will learn about the UDL framework and how it can be used to design instruction for all learners, and practical strategies that can be useful and engaging for the diverse learners in the classroom. Educators will explore how to use “everyday technologies” such as laptops and tablets to create projects that address academic, social and behavioral goals. Two hands-on technology projects will be created that model how UDL can be used with a range of learners.
Rao is an associate professor in the College of Education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Rao teaches courses on educational and assistive technologies and has been a teacher trainer for more than 15 years working with teachers to integrate creative and engaging uses of technology and multimedia into the classrooms to support the needs of students receiving special education services and English language learners. Her research focuses on how the UDL framework can help create environments that meet the needs of diverse students in both general and special education settings.
