Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from July 28 through Sunday. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 712 DUI arrests compared with 724 during the same period last year, a 1.7 percent decrease, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona officers arrested 10 motorists while Hilo officers arrested nine, according to police. South Kohala and Puna officers arrested four motorists in each district while Hamakua and Kaʻu officers arrested one motorist in each district.
There have been 923 major accidents so far this year compared with 813 during the same period last year, a 13.5 percent increase. There have also been eight traffic fatalities on the island compared with 19 during the same period last year, a 57.9 percent decrease.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs while two fatalities were related to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
