Nearly 150 young athletes and coaches attended the second annual Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp held July 21-24 in Hilo.
Boys and girls 9 to 17 years old received personalized instruction from former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach Jimmy Yagi, who helped guide the Vulcans-Hawaii Basketball School for 37 years.
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation offered the camp as a low-cost, end-of-summer program for children to learn basketball fundamentals. Shooting, defense, proper basketball stance, footwork, dribbling and teamwork were among the lessons.
Teenage campers played at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, while preteens were assigned to the Panaewa Covered Play Courts.
The staff included Yagi, lead clinician Bill O’Rear, UH-Hilo men’s basketball head coach GE Coleman, UH-Hilo women’s basketball head coach David Kaneshiro and Honokaa girls basketball coach Daphne Honma.
