The drums will be pounding and hips will again be gyrating as the Tahiti Fete of Hilo returns to Hawaii Island Saturday and Sunday.
The festival will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, 323 Manono St. in Hilo.
Tahitian halau and individual dancers will perform at this dance competition. Several dance companies have already signed up from around Hawaii, the mainland and Mexico. The fete highlights Polynesian culture, Tahitian in particular, and helps to foster camaraderie and the aloha spirit among dance and music companies and entertainers from around the world.
The event also features arts, crafts, food and product vendors. Multiple Na Hoku Hanohano winner Mark Yamanaka and Grammy Award nominee Kahulanui will highlight the event.
With more than two decades of producing the much larger Tahiti Fete of San Jose, which is largest of its kind in the U.S., Pua Tokumoto brought the fete to Hilo in 2000.
Cost is $15 for general admission, $10 for children ages 5 to 12, seniors 65 and older and full-time students. Parking is free.
