WAILUKU, Maui — The Maui Planning Commission has approved work for a 10-acre expansion of the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao.
The Maui News reports that the Hawaii Department of Accounting and General Services received unanimous approval for a special use permit for the expansion work and improvements.
Tuesday’s action removed one of the last remaining hurdles for expansion of the 7-acre cemetery. Only 109 burial places out of 3,320 are available at the current site.
Makawao Cemetery Association president Camille DuBois Lyons expressed concerns about plans in the state’s application calling for a security fence and locked gate. She says her group wants round-the-clock access.
Officials say public access is a matter for Maui County, which operates and maintains the cemetery through the highways division of its Department of Public Works.
