The first group of inmates arrived Monday at the reopened Kulani Correctional Facility.

The state Department of Public Safety announced that 21 inmates arrived at the renovated facility, located at the top of Stainback Highway.

The prison closed in 2009 as a result of budget cutbacks.

It reopened July 1.

There are currently 56 staff working at the facility, according to DPS. Sixteen new corrections officers started training June 30 and will begin their jobs at Kulani upon graduation in August. In addition, 19 more positions are in various stages of recruitment.

Kulani’s 200 low-risk inmates will return in phases. The rest will return in increments over the next five months.
