Heavy rain reported northwest of Hilo has prompted a flood advisory that remains in effect until 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.
At 5 a.m., radar showed moderate to heavy rain near Papaikou, approximately 7 miles northwest of Hilo, according to forecasters. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. Gauges at the Honolii Stream and Wailuku River indicate water levels are continuing to rise slowly. Both are running several feet above normal.
Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Hilo, Pepeekeo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honomu and Hakalau.
The public is advised to stay away streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
