A high surf advisory remains in effect for south-facing shores of the Big Island through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
A low located east of New Zealand last week generated a swell that is affecting south-facing shores along the Big Island’s Kona, South, East and North coasts, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The surf is forecast to range in height from 5 to 8 feet, according to the service.
The service categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” noting that the public should expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents that can make swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers are urged to heed all advice given by ocean safety officials.
