HONOLULU — The state wants to redevelop a 60-year-old public housing complex near downtown Honolulu.
The Hawaii Public Housing Authority on Friday issued a request for qualifications for a developer for Mayor Wright Homes.
The state wants to turn the federal low-income public housing complex into a mixed-income development.
The complex was built in 1953 and has been plagued in recent years by problems such as violence and a lack of hot water.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie says the public housing authority has addressed repair backlogs and improved security.
The authority says there isn’t enough state or federal money to address the complex’s capital needs. The authority says the mixed-income, mixed-financed and mixed-use model will provide additional funds needed to revitalize the site and surrounding neighborhood.
