Boating safety class planned for Saturday
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is conducting a boating safety class from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday near Keauhou Bay at 78-7156 Kaleiopapa St.
The class is limited to 20 students. The cost is $40, which includes lunch and books. This class satisfies state law requiring anyone operating a boat to have taken a boating safety class.

Hala workshop offered in Captain Cook
The public is invited to learn traditional uses of hala and how to prepare leaves for weaving from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.
Participants will make a bracelet. Cost is $10 for Bishop Museum members or $15 for nonmembers. Class size is limited to 15.

Buddhist temple holds memorial service Saturday
The Honokaa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple invites the community to join its 111th annual memorial service at 6 p.m. Saturday in the social hall, followed by bon dance at 7 p.m.
Anyone of any faith is encouraged to remember and honor loved ones who have died in the past 12 months. Names may be submitted in advance to the Rev. Shingo Furusawa at 775-7232, 987-4928 or shingofurusawa@gmail.com.
During the service, when the person’s name is called, anyone may step forward with friends and family to offer incense, which is provided. Also, anyone can honor loved ones by submitting a name just prior to the ceremony. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Event planned at Onizuka Space Center
The Onizuka Space Center will hold its 23rd anniversary event from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The free event will include hourly door prizes, special science activities and cosmic treats for children. The center is located at Kona International Airport and can be reached at 329-3441.
Parker library boosters meeting
The Friends of Thelma Parker Memorial Library will hold its annual meeting at 5 p.m. Saturday in the library conference room. A short meeting will be held followed by election of officers. Dinner will be provided, but pupu and desserts are welcome. Those who plan to bring food should contact Arlene Block at arleneblock@prodigy.net.
Head librarian Pam Akao will present awards to volunteers and historian Boyd Bond will speak on Waimea’s history and legacy.
