Thomas to discuss water findings
Don Thomas, director of the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes at University of Hawaii at Hilo, is working at the center of two resources humans need for survival and modern life: water and energy. He will discuss his recent explorations in the saddle area of Hawaii Island looking for groundwater and geothermal energy resources from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center, 73-4460 Queen Kaahumanu Highway, Kailua-Kona. The event includes time before and after the presentation for questions, answers and networking opportunities.
There have been some surprising findings of water at higher elevations than previously suspected and that has led to the recognition of subsurface geologic structures in the interior of the island that could have implications for groundwater and geothermal resources on Hawaii Island and on the older islands as well. He will also discuss how the results of his Saddle Road test hole, as well as his earlier research on Hilo’s deep hydrology, may have applicability to Kona’s groundwater system.
Thomas is the director of the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes at University of Hawaii at Hilo. He has a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Hawaii, and has been active in the study of groundwater hydrology of the Hawaiian Islands.
The program is part of a monthly pau hana series for people interested in technology in West Hawaii. Each month, a presenter discusses a different topic related to technology and entrepreneurship. All are welcome. A potluck is included with the event. Bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share; reusable plates and cups are encouraged.
