Surfers deserve better purses
Surfers deserve better purses
With many saying the fabulous sport of surfing had its beginnings in the Hawaiian Islands prior to pre-contact times, it is sad that the prize money for such a skilled art is so little. I say that, because, surfing in my heart and soul entails being both a great swimmer and an incredible acrobat virtually simultaneously.
With Hawaii having the best warm waters around the globe the whole year long, again it has to be said that it is a sad phenomenon that surfing prizes are so small. The draw of the fabulous sport of surfing to the Hawaiian Islands is immeasurable in terms of the amount of tourists who flock to these lands and the money spent in paradise. Just look at how many people head to the North Shore of Oahu during the winter months.
With the emergence of Carrisa Moore and Coco Ho on the women’s surfing scene, businesses and people of the Hawaiian Islands should contribute more to our local surf events. That way more Carissa Moores and Coco Hos can realize a dream.
