Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 30 and Sunday. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; three were younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 637 DUI arrests on the Big Island compared with 646 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona officers arrested 12 of the 21 motorists while Puna officers arrested four, according to police. South Hilo and South Kohala officers arrested two motorists in each district and officers arrested one driver in the Kaʻu District.
There have been 795 major accidents so far this year compared with 720 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 61.1 percent.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two fatalities to a combination of both drugs and alcohol.
