Road closures will be in effect on Kuakini Highway, Palani Road and Alii Drive in downtown Kailua-Kona on Friday evening for Independence Day festivities.

Road closures will be in effect on Kuakini Highway, Palani Road and Alii Drive in downtown Kailua-Kona on Friday evening for Independence Day festivities.

The roads will close at 5:45 p.m. and reopen after all festivities around 8:15 p.m., according to the Kailua-Kona Community Parade Association. The closures affect Kuakini Highway, between Loloku Street and Palani Road; Palani Road, between its intersection with Kuakini Highway and Alii Drive; and Alii Drive, between Palani and Walua roads.

The annual Kailua-Kona Independence Day parade starts at 6 p.m., following the inaugural 4th of July Lava Kids Liberty Fun Run. The parade route starts at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium and ends at Walua Road.

Announcer stations are located at West Hawaii Today, Big Daddy’s, King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, Queen Emma Square, Pancho & Lefty’s Mexican Cantina, Hale Halawai, Island Lava Java, and Humpy’s Big Island Alehouse.

Fireworks over Kailua Bay are slated for 8 p.m., according to the association.
