Big Island police have initiated an assault investigation in connection with a 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man who was found critically injured Tuesday morning in Kailua-Kona.
At 5:55 a.m. Tuesday, patrol officers conducting routine checks near the Kailua Pier observed an unconscious local man lying face down on the makai sidewalk of Alii Drive by the sea wall, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The victim, who was identified as a 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man, was taken to Kona Community Hospital with a head injury and later to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in critical condition, according to police.
Police are looking for witnesses, including canoe paddlers, who may have seen the incident.
