The American Association of University Women Kona Branch has awarded its 2014 scholarships to young women at three West Hawaii high schools this year. Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship to assist with her future educational goals.
After graduating from Konawaena High School, Miranda Lugo is planning to attend New York University this fall majoring in psychology. She has served in a variety of positions in student government during the course of her high school career, as well as participating on the golf and swim teams. She was the vice president of the Leo Club on campus and has worked on several community projects including beach cleanups, food drives and Special Olympics.
Sarah Pike, a graduate of Kealakehe High, will head to the mainland to begin her college career at George Fox University. She is planning to major in business, as she aspires to a management position in a major company after college. Her high school and community activities were many and varied including serving as the secretary of events for the National Honor Society, participating on the Kona Aquatics swim team, and dancing and leading hula with a local halau. She was also a member of the KHS World Quest team of four that demonstrated their knowledge of U.S. and global affairs when they represented Hawaii at the national competition in April.
The University of Oregon will be the destination this fall for Sullivan Schuster, a graduate of West Hawaii Explorations Academy, who is planning to study environmental science and/or marine biology. She has given campus tours to large groups of adults and children, has worked in retail and has participated in a number of school and community activities both in the water and on dry land.
