WAILUKU, Maui — The mayor of Maui has ordered administration staff members to stop speaking or writing directly to Maui County Council members.
Mayor Alan Arakawa in a letter to council Chairwoman Gladys Baisa says he’s taking the step to establish a formal line of communication and to make sure council members receive correct information.
Maui County communications director Rod Antone tells the Maui News the mayor wants to avoid future miscommunication.
Arakawa in July issued a similar directive but pulled it back. Council Vice Chairman Robert Carroll responded with a letter that said there were legal and practical concerns that the policy would cause unintended consequences and the mayor suspended the policy.
Baisa says council members continue to have concerns and council staff is seeking legal advice.
