The earthquake struck at 5:16 p.m. Hawaii time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. It was located near Rat Island, within the Aleutian Islands.
Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no threat of tsunami to Hawaii, according to the center.
Earlier Monday, shortly before 11 a.m., a magnitude-8.0 earthquake was also recorded near Rat Island, according to the center. No Pacific-wide tsunami was triggered.
