The earthquake struck at 10:53 a.m. Hawaii time near Rat Island within the Aleutian Islands, according to the center. The center upgraded the magnitude shortly after its initial release stating it was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake.
Based on all available data, a destricturive Pacific-wide tsunam is not expected and there is no threat of tsunami to Hawaii.
