Living Arts Gallery in Hawi will feature a show of recent paintings by Maya Soaringsun, also known as Karen Sorensen, duging July. The show, “Spirit of Hawaii” features original paintings which blend the mythical, the magical and the metaphysical aspects of Hawaii.

Soaringsun is a visionary artist of meta-realism, revealing mystical dimensions beyond the reality we all can see. She is comfortable at play in the realms of goddesses, legends and elemental spirits. Along with depicting the beauty of nature, her meta-conscious mind leads her brush into the illusive realms of the living spirit. Differences between nature, element, human and divine do not exist.

Her “Spirit of Hawaii” collection makes perceivable a lively personification of the elemental forces of Hawaii, the living spirit found in plants, trees, the aina, in waves, mountains, the volcano and the sky. Pele, the goddess of the volcano, Poliahu, goddess of Mauna Kea’s snowy peaks, the God Maui and his mother Goddess Hina at Rainbow Falls, the Kumu of Kalo, and the Spirit of Aloha can be found emerging as revered dieties of the mana, or life force of the powerful natural primal elements that dominate and shape the mystical and exquisite Hawaiian Islands.

An artist reception will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. July 12 at the gallery. At 5 p.m., she will present insights behind her painted images, followed by ukulele songs and drum chants from her Hawaiian-inspired concert “I ka Piko o ke Aloha.” Refreshments will be served.

The gallery is located on the main street of Hawi, at 55-3435 Akoni Pule Highway, No. 10 and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 889-0739 or visit livingartsgallery.net.
