Calip, Jaffurs to meet for Manoa title
As a former three-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, Nainoa Calip knows something about winning.
Calip is also familiar with finishing runner-up. He took second last month at the Big West championship in his final competition for the University of Hawaii.
It will be one or the other for Calip at the Manoa Cup after the Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate and former University of Hawaii at Hilo golfer Isaac Jaffurs were the last two standing Friday after each earned two more victories at Oahu Country Club.
The 36-hole final starts 7 a.m. Saturday.
In a semifinal match against Scotty Yamashita, Calip went ahead with a par on No. 16 then put his former UH teammate away with a birdie on No. 17 for a 2-and-1 victory.
The only time Calip trailed Friday was early in his quarterfinal when he bogeyed the third hole against Kengo Aoshima of Honolulu.
But Calip picked up steam with an eagle on No. 5 and was bogey-free the rest of the way with three birdies to prevail 3 and 1.
Jaffurs, a native of Haleiwa, Oahu, who tied for 12th at the 2009 Pacific West Conference championships as a Vulcans senior, had an easy time in the semifinals. He won each of the first four holes against Honolulu’s Doug Williams en route to a 4-and-3 victory. In the morning, Jaffurs handled Honolulu’s Cole Shintaku 2 and 1.
