Waimea Elementary offering free meals

Waimea Elementary School is providing free breakfasts and lunches for children younger than 18. Breakfast is from 7 to 8 a.m., lunch from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and noon to 12:15 p.m. weekdays in the cafeteria now through July 18. No paperwork or ID is needed. Meals must be eaten in the cafeteria. This is a federally funded food service program for which Waimea Elementary applied.

Fisheries Council meeting Thursday

The West Hawaii Fisheries Council meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This month’s featured guest will be Malia Chow, sanctuary superintendent of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary for the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. She will give an update on proposed changes to the sanctuary management plan.

The meeting room is the Community Hale on the far makai side of the complex. Look for signs.

First stars in the universe discussed

Michael Bolte from University of California at Santa Cruz will discuss observations from Keck Observatory that identify the physical properties of the first stars based on the chemical elements they produced as they ended their lives.

“First Light in the Universe: The End of the Cosmic Dark Ages” will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. The presentation is free.

West Hawaii County Band rocks out Friday

The West Hawaii County Band celebrates rock music at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. The band will perform songs by Chicago, The Beatles and Santana, as well as works by Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra. This concert is part of the free monthly concert series presented by Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Shriners meet Wednesday for lunch

All resident and visiting Shriners are invited to meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Fish Hopper restaurant in Kailua-Kona.
