Hawaii Island’s summer classical music festival is celebrating its 10th season beginning June 30. String quartets, opera, musical theater and jazz concerts, Gilbert &Sullivan at the Kahilu Theatre, music of South Africa, chamber music and dramatic arias — are all on the bill. The festival will welcome the violin phenomenon Chee-Yun, British jazz legend Liane Carroll and American composer Ricky Ian Gordon. Everyone is invited to be a part of this monthlong musical extravaganza.
The festival has brought in an estimated $5 million in tourist dollars to Hawaii Island. Students come and study, their families and friends come to see them perform. Music lovers from all over the world come to be a part of the festivities. The festival offers free tickets to disadvantaged music lovers, supports local food banks and has joined Voices Against Bullying.
“We’re planning the best festival ever this summer,” said artistic director Val Underwood. “In the period of one month, we’ll produce over 25 concerts, in venues as diverse as farmers markets and the Palace Theater in Hilo. There’s something for everyone, including free concerts.”
