Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for alleged driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 2 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 545 DUI arrests compared with 571 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
South Hilo officers arrested 10 motorists while Kona officers arrested eight, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists and North Kohala officers one.
So far this year, Kona officers have made 199 arrests; South Hilo officers 186; South Kohala officers 67, Ka’u officers nine; North Kohala officers three; Hamakua officers two; and North Hilo officers one, according to police.
There have been 684 major accidents so far this year compared with 618 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island, compared with 17 during the same period last year, a 58.5 percent decline.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
