Just two days after their medal-winning performances at the 46th annual Special Olympics summer state games, some of West Hawaii’s most dedicated athletes were back on the practice field Tuesday.
Just two days after their medal-winning performances at the 46th annual Special Olympics summer state games, some of West Hawaii’s most dedicated athletes were back on the practice field Tuesday.
More than a dozen athletes and volunteers gathered at Kona Community Aquatic Center field to practice bocce in preparation for the Area Games, which will be held July 26 and also include soccer. One Olympian, Josh Penner, proudly wore the medals that he won earned at the field competition in Honolulu over the weekend.
While some of the competitors were seasoned veterans in bocce, others were just learning the game and its rules. Players’ skill levels were tested at the beginning of practice in order to find competitive playing partners.
The local Special Olympians will continue practicing each Tuesday and Friday at the Kona fields until the Area Games and will then participate in the state competition Aug. 7-8.
