Youth mentoring plan discussed today

The Life Plan Youth Mentoring Program, sponsored by the Hualalai Ohana Foundation, will present its mission to the Kailua-Kona Lions Club at noon today. The event will be held at the meeting room iat KBXtreme at Lanihau Shopping Center. Food will be available at the counter. Reservations are not required.

Events mark National Trails Day

Several events are planned in June to commemorate National Trails Day, which is Saturday.

On Hawaii Island, there is only one National Historic Trail, Ala Kahakai, which traverses four National Parks: Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The first event will be Saturday at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park. Meet at 9 a.m. at the canoe hale at Aiopio fishtrap in the park and join a guided ranger hike on Ala Kahakai Trail north to Kaloko fishpond and back. Hikers should have good shoes, water, sunscreen and a hat. Participants should plan on about two hours for the hike. For more information, call 326-9057.

On Friday volunteers will build sediment dams and on Saturday they will install irrigation lines and water diversion measures at Hawaiian Homestead in Kawaihae. Through June 30 pick up a National Trails Day card at any national park’s visitor center. Hike a section of Ala Kahakai and a trail in three of the four Hawaii Island parks in June. Each time you complete a hike, validate the card at that park’s visitor center. Turn in the card when four hikes are completed and receive an Ala Kahakai pin and an opportunity to win an America the Beautiful pass. This pass covers entrance fees to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites and is valid for 12 months. All ages are invited to participate.

Event honors King Kamehameha I

The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabsh Cousins present “Afternoon at Hulihee” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hulihee Palace to remember King Kamehameha I, Paiea.

The Merrie Monarchs, performing arts by kumu hula Etua Lopes and his Halau Na Pua Ui O Hawaii and the Hulihee Palace Band will perform. The event is part of the palace’s series of free monthly concerts that honor Hawaii’s past monarchs and historical figures. Donations are appreciated. Bring a beach mat or chair.

Hulihee Palace museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The palace is open from 1 to 4 p.m. the Monday following the monthly Kokua Kailua Village stroll. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for kamaaina, military and seniors, and $1 for keiki 18 years and younger. Docent-guided tours are available upon request. Puu Oo Trail hike planned

To celebrate National Trails Day, E Mau Na Ala Hele will sponsor a hike Sunday on the Puu Oo Trail off Saddle Road where hikers can enjoy native plant habitat, bird watching and photography.

Hikers should be prepared for all weather, wear sturdy footwear, bring a lunch and water. The trail runs through a hunting area so wear bright colored clothing.

The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the hunter check station at Puu Huluhulu at the 28 mile marker and carpool to the trailhead on Saddle Road near the 22 mile marker and return by mid-afternoon. Hospital auxiliary meets Monday

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold its monthly board meeting at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. Changes to policies and procedures are on the agenda.

Visitors are welcome to attend the meeting and a bake sale held from 7 to 9 a.m. every Friday in the hospital cafeteria.
