Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant from May 26 through Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far, there have been 524 DUI arrests this year, compared with 554 during the same period last year, a 5.4 percent decrease.
South Hilo officers arrested eight motorists while Kona officers arrested four and Puna officers three, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists while Ka’u officers arrested one driver.
There have been 665 major accidents this year, compared with the 593 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been seven traffic fatalities on public Big Island roadways this year, compared with 16 during the same period last year, a 56.3 percent decrease.
To date, two of the fatalities were related to drugs while two other fatalities were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
