KALAHEO, Kauai — Kauai officials say Kalaheo residents should prepare for intermittent water outages going forward as it works to fix a damaged shaft.

Kauai County officials said Wednesday that damage to the 1,000-foot shaft put both the town’s water sources out of service. Officials say a backup system can’t meet demand and there’s no timeline for repairs.

A contractor hasn’t reached the spot where the damage occurred.

Mayor Bernard Carvalho says he is concerned and is reaching out to other agencies to see if they can help. He says the county will do all it can to meet water needs of homes and businesses.

The Department of Water has been delivering water to tank sites but is urging people to use water only for essential needs like cooking, bathing and flushing toilets.
