Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between May 19 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; five were younger than 21.
South Hilo officers arrested nine drivers, Kona officers arrested four, and Puna officers arrested three, according to the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists.
So far this year, there have been 506 suspected DUI arrests compared with 530 during the same period last year, according to the department. Some 187 people have been arrested for suspected DUI in the Kona police district, which comprises North and South Kona.
There have been 637 major accidents so far this year compared with 560 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island public roadways compared with 13 during the same period last year. To date, four fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
