Lewis to lead HPA tennis
Jeff Lewis has been named director of the Rutgers Tennis Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, effective June 1.
Lewis replaces Steve Campbell, who is relocating to Maui. Lewis will oversee all schedules and activities for the tennis center and serve as head coach for the girls and boys varsity teams.
Lewis, a certified tennis professional, has almost 20 years of experience teaching and managing tennis facilities, recently at Tennissmith in Tampa, Fla. He has directed summer tennis camps for children of all ages and abilities.

Makalei tourney starts Saturday
The first of four events of a summer tournament at Makalei Golf Club starts Saturday.
The other dates are: June 21, July 19 and Aug. 16.
Prizes are given at each event, and points accumulate toward qualification for the Makalei Cup Challenge.

Free tennis lessons at Holua
Holua Resort will hold free tennis clinics May 31 through the “Tennis Across America” program of the United States Professional Tennis Association.
Tennis professional Don Guluzzy will conduct the three one-hour sessions, scheduled between 8 and 11 a.m. Racquets and balls will be provided.

AYSO soccer camps
AYSO Region 527 and Team Soccer Direct are offering camps June 24 to 26 at Old Kona Airport Park.The Day Camp, for U-6 to U-14, is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $130.
The High School Camp, for U-14 to U-18, is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $85.
There is a $10 discount for registration online at teamsoccerdirect.com. Each player receives a T-shirt and certificate.

Basketball camp set for Honokaa
The Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 30 to June 1 at Honokaa Parks and Recreation Gym.
The camp is for children who just completed kindergarten through eighth grade.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. May 30 for kindergarten through third grade, or 8 and younger; noon for fourth- through eighth-graders, or keiki 9 and older.
The session for the younger group runs 8:30 a.m. to noon, while the older group goes 1 to 4:30 p.m.
The $50 fee — payable to Big Island All-Stars with “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in the memo — and application are due by Wednesday. Mail them to Daphne Honma, P. O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776.

20th annual King’s Swim
Kona Aquatics will host the 20th annual King’s Swim on July 5 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay. No wetsuits or fins are permitted.
Applications are available at Bikeworks in Kona. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany application. The registration deadline is June 30. Late registration will be held at Kailua Pier from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. race day for $20.
Division awards will be presented to the top three finishers and special prizes will be drawn throughout the postrace ceremonies.
Volunteers with kayaks, surfboards, or standup paddleboards who volunteer for safely patrol are welcome; report to the pier before 7:30 a.m.

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea features the state finals high school division June 12 to 15.

Big Island soccer camp at HPA
The Big Island I.D. Soccer Camp will be held June 23 to 26 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
The camp is divided into two sessions:
- Youth Camp, Under 7-U14, runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
- College I.D. Camp, U15-U18, runs from 3 to 6 p.m.
Cost is $165 per camper.
Guest coaches include:
- Jeff Illingworth, former director of coaching at CV Manchester United FC, now coaching with the San Diego Surf, and representing Pro I.D. Soccer Camps. He has coached for more than 30 years.
- Andy Hargreaves has 25 years of coaching experience with clubs including Southern California’s Nomad, Surf and DMVC Sharks. He is the head coach of Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, and a staff coach at RSF Attack.
- Vince La Porta, who has coached youth soccer across the U.S. for 15 years while playing semi-pro and professional soccer in California and Massachusetts. He currently serves as director of coaching at Kona Crush Soccer Academy and as a staff coach for Hawaii State ODP.

Half-court hoops for 50-over
A 3-on-3 half-court league for players 50 and older begins May 28 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
The games are from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. There will be 12 teams.

Konawaena football game and food drive
The Wildcats will partner with Hawaii Food Basket on May 30 for a food drive at their Green & White game at Konawaena High School.
Fans who donate four cans or five pounds of food will receive complimentary tickets to the game. Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for senior citizens; and free for children 12 and younger. Nonperishable food items must be in cans or unopened bags.
The Green & White game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:30 flag football game between the police and fire departments.
Senior kicker John Replogle will be honored at a halftime ceremony for accomplishments that earned him a spot on the 2013 All-BIIF First Team.

Registration for Hilo’s triathlon
Hilo’s first official triathlon will start at 7 a.m. July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park.
The Olympic-distance race — 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and 10-km run — is limited to 500 participants.
Registration is $150 through May 30 and $175 to midnight June 30.

Summer hoops camp at Konawaena
Huntington Prep’s Rob Fulford will be the guest coach at the 2014 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball Camp.
The camp is scheduled June 16 to 20 at Konawaena High School.
Fulford has a 138-17 record in five years at Huntington Prep and sent 30 players to the Division 1 level. In that five-year span, he coached 15 McDonald All-American nominees and current NBA player Gorgui Dieng of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The HIH camp features coaches from the NCAA, NAIA and junior college levels.
