Victoria “Vicky” “Sweet Pea” Ann Shuffield, 52, of Kailua-Kona died April 22, 2014, at her residence. Born Jan. 31, 1962, in Ventura, Calif., she was disabled.

Bertha Nakano
Bertha “Yuki” Yukiko Nakano, 77, of Hilo died May 20, 2014, at a care home in Hilo. Born Nov. 1, 1936, in Hilo, she was retired from the Hawaii County Department of Finance, a former owner of Chika Nakano Repair Shop, RSVP volunteer, and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Hiroshima Kenjinkai, Kamana Senior Center Chorus, Countryline Line Dancing Club and Boots &Denim Country Line Dancing Club.
Friends may call at 4 p.m. May 29 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no monetary gifts or flowers.
She is survived by sons, Chris (Lois) Nakano and Brian (Paige) Nakano, both of Hilo; daughter, Sheri (Tim) Christopher of Hilo; sisters, Sumiko (Carl) Takaki of Whittier, Calif., Agnes Furutani of Waikele, Oahu; brother, George Kawamoto of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Patrick Calip
Patrick Pasion Calip, 86, of Mountain View died May 14. Born in the Philippines, he retired as a crusher operator.
Friends may call at 8 a.m. May 31 at Borthwick Hawaii Funeral Home for a 9:30 a.m. service. Burial follows at 11 a.m. at Homelani Memorial Park and Cemetery.
He is survived by sons, Elpidio (Lori) Calip of Mountain View, Warren (Mary) Calip of Pahoa, Clyde Calip of Milolii; daughters, Janice (Ray) Kilgore of Colorado, April Liberato of Pahoa; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bettimae Wailani Johansen, 93, of Lahaina, Maui and Ahualoa died May 17, 2014, at home. Born in Lahaina, Maui, she was a retired Hawaiian quilter, member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, a lei maker and sushi demonstrator at the Marriott Hotel in Kaanapali, Maui.
Friends may call at 1 p.m. May 31 at the Honokaa Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses for a 2 p.m. service. Additional services will be held on Maui at a later date. Family requests casual attire be worn.
She is survived by son, Albert Johansen of Pearl City, Oahu; daughters, Irmanetta (Wendell) Branco of Ahualoa, Tepatasi (Myman) Sparks of Lahaina, Maui; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Rena Ursula Brincat, 93, of Kailua-Kona died May 15, 2014, at her residence. Born May 6, 1921, in Somerville, N.J., she retired from the aerospace industry as an executive secretary.

She is survived by son, Robert (Donna) Evett of Holualoa; daughter, Barbara Evett of California; one grandson; two great-grandchildren.

Benjamin Mahilum
Benjamin Comawas Mahilum, 82, of Honokaa died May 10, 2014, at his residence. Born Sept. 9, 1931, in Calatrava, Negros Occidental, Philippines, he was a retired professor in soil science at the University of Hawaii and at some universities in the Philippines.

He is survived by wife, Paulita Mahilum of Honokaa; sons, David (Elsie) Mahilum of the Philippines, Lyman (Marife) Mahilum of Yokosuka, Japan, Jorge (Debbi) Mahilum of Kailua-Kona, Don (Seanna) Mahilum of Mililani, Oahu; daughters, Lourdes (Cesar) Nadala of Seattle, Junever (John West) Mahilum-West of Toronto; 20 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Sandra Pillette
Sandra Catherine Pillette, 68, of Ocean View died April 27, 2014, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 26, 1945, in Detroit, she was a substitute teacher at Pahala High School, drew plans for Kahuku Park and the Kahuku Fire Station and was a member of the Elks Club of Kona.
Private services will be held.
She is survived by son, Kelly Pillette of Ocean View; stepson, David Pillette III of Michigan; stepdaughter, Mary (Ken) Popour of Michigan; sisters, Andrea (Fred) Ohr of New Jersey, Kathleen Wallace of Michigan; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Thomas Norman Tuttle, 54, of Hilo died May 13, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 5, 1959, in Portland, Ore., he was a roofer and member of the Aloha Chapel.

Irvin “Irv” Theodore Carlsen, 100, of Keaau died May 14, 2014, at home. Born April 8, 1914, in Susanville, Calif., he was a retired radio broadcaster, member of Seniors of Paradise Park and Seniors of Pahoa and honorary member of the Eagles.
