With the approach of the Memorial Day weekend and the continuation of graduation parties, Big Island police will be on alert to help prevent tragedy on the roads.
Police officers will conduct DUI checkpoints and roving patrols today through Monday. The effort is part of “Drunk Driving: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” a national and statewide campaign, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Driving under the influence of alcohol presents a potential danger to every motorist, passenger and pedestrian the driver encounters. This year, police have made nearly 500 DUI arrests and there have been more than 600 traffic collisions.
Police ask the public to help keep the roads safe and always have a designated sober and licensed driver before starting to drink, or take a taxi.
