HONOLULU — Hawaii is proving to be a dangerous place for senior pedestrians.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Hawaii has the highest fatality rate in the nation per capital for older pedestrians.
This is according to a new report from Smart Growth America, which says Hawaii has 6.81 deaths per every 100,000 adults 65 and older. The report covers the years 2003 to 2010.
The fatality rate jumps to 9.75 per 100,000 residents for those 75 and older.
Honolulu city officials passed an ordinance in 2012 to ensure city planners include walking and bicycling considerations in new transportation projects. Three demonstration projects in that effort should be finished this year.
