Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for alleged driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
So far this year, there have been 488 DUI arrested, compared with 517 during the same period last year, a 5.6 percent decrease, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
South Hilo officers arrested 11 motorists while Kona officers arrested 10 and South Kohala officers two, according to the department.
There have also been 610 accidents this year, compared with the 529 during the same period last year, a 15.3 percent increase.
Six traffic fatalities have occurred on the Hawaii Island this year, compared with 13 during the same period last year, a 53.8 percent decrease.
To date, one fatality was related to drugs while two were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
