More than 100 Hawaii Community College and University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii students have a reason to celebrate.

More than 100 Hawaii Community College and University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii students have a reason to celebrate.

The college held its commencement ceremony Saturday in the Hilton Waikoloa Village Grand Ballroom, where degrees and diplomas were awarded to proud graduates.

Along with the HCC graduates, about 24 students received degrees from UH Manoa and UH West Oahu this year via the UH Center at West Hawaii, said Thatcher Moats of HCC external affairs and relations.

Father and daughter, Stefan and Malie Koehler, both Phi Theta Kappa members and graduates, were the student speakers at the ceremony. Marty Fletcher, the new director of HCC and UH Center at West Hawaii, was the keynote speaker.

“This is an important day in the lives of our students, and commencement is our way of honoring all the talent and hard work they have displayed on their way to obtaining their degrees and certificates,” Fletcher said.

HCC and UH Center at West Hawaii in Kealakekua delivers associate degrees and certificates, as well as bachelor and graduate degrees via distance learning from other universities in the UH system, Moats said.
