Author speaks Wednesday night

Author and anthropologist Sam Low presents “Hawaiki Rising” from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kona Stories Book Store in Keauhou Shopping Center.

Low sailed aboard Hokulea on three voyages from 1999 to 2007, and is the author of many articles on the canoe, and her meaning to Polynesians. “Hawaiki Rising” tells the story in the words of the men and women who created and sailed aboard Hokulea. They speak of growing up at the time when their Hawaiian culture was in danger of extinction; of their vision of sailing ancestral sea routes; and of the heartbreaking loss of Eddie Aikau in a courageous effort to save his crewmates when Hokulea capsized in a raging storm.

There will be a book signing following the event. For more information, call 324-0350.
