WAILUKU, Maui — Maui Police Chief Gary Yabuta is retiring in the next two months to take a new position with a federal anti-drug trafficking task force.
The police department said Friday Yabuta will become the Director of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas for Hawaii.
Yabuta joined the Maui police in 1983. He’ll be retiring with over 31 years of service.
Congress created the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program in 1988. It provides assistance to law enforcement agencies operating in areas determined to be critical drug-trafficking regions of the United States.
There 28 High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas in the country.
