Living Arts Gallery celebrates 5 years
Five years ago, five artists opened an artist owned and operated fine art gallery in Hawi. The Living Arts Gallery began with the motto, “Take Heart, Make ART!” and opened its doors June 11, 2009. Dedicated to featuring only the art of Big Island artists, the gallery draws artists from Hilo, Volcano, Kailua-Kona, South Kona, Waimea and Puna, as well as both North and South Kohala. The gallery has kept to its mission to be more than just “art on the walls,” and has hosted a number of community events each year, including an annual Winter Solstice concert, poetry readings, book signings and readings by aspiring writers.
The gallery currently showcases the artwork of about 75 Big Island artists, in a wide variety of media.

The gallery is located at 55-3435 Akoni Pule Highway in Hawi. It is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Concert benefits Fukushima Kids
Ursula Vieltze, violinist, and Annu Shionoya, pianist, both West Hawaii residents, will present their favorite pieces, including “Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi, at the Aloha-Keiki Ensemble Premier Concert beginning at 3 p.m. May 25 at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden. Joining them are Motter Snell, harpist from Seattle and part-time resident of Kailua-Kona, and Yumi Kikuchi, flutist and co-founder of Fukushima Kids Hawaii, who moved to Hawaii after the earthquake and nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011, in Japan. There will be a silent auction with pupu and organic wine at the concert.
Fukushima Kids Hawaii is a project of Aloha-Keiki, a 501(c)(3) run by donations and volunteers. The funds raised by the concert go to the 2014 summer program of Fukushima Kids Hawaii, which is inviting 10 children and two chaperones to spend a month in Hawaii.
Admission is $15 for an adult with a ticket, $20 at the door, free for a child with an adult. Five tickets are $60 and 10 tickets are $100 and valid for future Aloha Keiki Ensemble Concerts performed quarterly at the same venue. For tickets, call 334-9616.
KDEN auditioning
for summer musical
Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network will hold auditions for the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta “Ruddigore” at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Kilauea Theater in the Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The organization is looking for people of all ages to participate. They should come prepared to sing, dance and possibly read scenes from the script. Show dates are July 11 to 27.
As with all Gilbert and Sullivan, the stories revolve around duty and doing what is expected. This cast of characters consists of mortals and ghosts; officers, ancestors, villagers, and professional bridesmaids. There are lead roles for five men and four women. The show will be directed by Suzi Bond, with vocal direction by Chris Tomich.
