Hawaii Island police have initiated an attempted murder investigation in connection with a stabbing Saturday afternoon at a beach park in Hilo.

Hawaii Island police have initiated an attempted murder investigation in connection with a stabbing Saturday afternoon at a beach park in Hilo.

At 2:15 p.m. Saturday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of a stabbing off Keaukaha Road near 4-Mile Beach Park in the Keaukaha area, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

When officers arrived, they learned that a 41-year-old Hilo man had suffered multiple stab wounds to the back during an altercation with another man. The victim was en route to the hospital in a private vehicle when the vehicle came upon responding Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel, who transported him to Hilo Medical Hospital in critical but stable condition.

The suspect, 46-year-old Paul Gibson of Ocean View was located six minutes later on Laukapu Street in Hilo, according to police. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation.
