The University of Hawaii at Hilo softball team finished an up-and-down season on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader from Chaminade University, 8-6 and 7-1, on Oahu.
The season-ending Pacific West Conference twinbill was played at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio.
The Vulcans, under head coach Jaime Wallin, finished the season with a 22-20 record, including 15-14 in the PacWest.
The Silverswords ended with a 9-32 mark, 7-24 in conference.
In the opener, the Vulcans rallied from a 4-2 deficit to score six runs in the sixth inning and edge the Silverswords.
Kaylie Drew (2 RBIs), Kristina Victa (1 RBI) and Melanie Morelos each had two hits to lead UH-Hilo. Samantha Ford (2 RBIs) and Theresa Caplionch (2 RBIs) each had three hits and Ella Lizarraga two hits for the hosts.
Vulcans starter Ashley Nelson (12-10) went the distance to get the win. Chaminade starter Brett Aspel (4-19) took the loss.
In Game 2, the Vulcans started fast and built a 5-0 lead through three innings. The Silverswords plated a run in the fifth before UH-Hilo closed the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
Emily Greene (2 RBIs) had two hits, including a home run, to highlight the Vulcans’ 12-hit attack. Victa, Drew and Rebecca Lee (1 RBI) each added two hits. Teammate Brittany Huff had a double and two RBIs.
Coco Stewart was the lone Silversword to pair hits.
Alyse Harris (2-1) went the distance for UH-Hilo to earn the win. She hurled a five-hitter, striking out two and walking five. Chaminade starter Kaitlyn Watanabe (4-9) lasted just 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. She allowed six hits and five runs. Reliever Chelsea Camello, a former Waiakea High standout, pitched the final 4 2/3 innings, scattering six hits and allowing two runs.
