If Waiakea senior Andi Igawa has a bad round of golf, by her gold standard, it’s still better than the rest of the field — a fashionable way to inch closer to her first Big Island Interscholastic Federation title.
Igawa shot a 13-over-par 85 in the second round of the BIIF championships on Tuesday at Hokulia under sunny weather and calm conditions to hold a commanding 10-shot lead going in the finale.
The top nine girls advance to the third round on Thursday at Mauna Kea.
Trailing Igawa (79-85—164 total), a two-time BIIF runner-up, is Kamehameha junior Shantel Antonio (87-87—174) and Hilo senior Amanda Loeffler (83-96—179).
Igawa has an excellent shot at continuing Waiakea’s tradition of BIIF individual champions for an 11th consecutive year.
It’s a bit of consolation for the Warriors, who didn’t have the numbers to add an 11th consecutive BIIF team crown. Hilo won the league title.
While the girls championship is turning into a blowout, the boys title chase is a dogfight with five contenders within nine shots of leader Trevor Hirata, a Waiakea sophomore, who fired an 81 for a 151 total, a stroker better than Kamehameha freshman Kalai Pomroy (77-75—152).
Kamehameha senior Cody Pereira (74-79—153) is right behind and closely followed by Hilo senior Casey Nakatsu (80-75—155), Kamehameha sophomore Preston Ching (82-75—157), and Waiakea freshman Shon Katahira (73-87—160).
