Fire officials are investigating the cause of a 12-acre brush fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon near the southern end of Punaluu Beach.
Responding to the 5:52 p.m. report, firefighters found the fire located at the southern end of the beach area and spreading south through brush and trees, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department. The fire, which upon their arrival was just 1/4 acre in size, was being fanned by east-northeast winds around 25 to 35 mph through vacant land.
The department utilized various vehicles with off-road capabilities to suppress the head of the fire, secure the roadway and protect the Colony One Condos, according to the department.
The fire was declared under control at 8:03 p.m. Crews remained on scene throughout the night to quash any flareups.
No road closures or evacuations were required, according to the department.
