Azusa Pacific University pushed across two runs in the top of the 14th inning and edged the University of Hawaii at Hilo 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Pacific West Conference baseball game was played at Wong Stadium and closed out the teams’ four-game series. The visiting Cougars (25-15, 18-10 PacWest) won three of the four games over the Vulcans (11-30, 9-21).

APU rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh inning, scoring solo runs in the eighth and ninth to tie it at 3-all. The teams battled through the extra frames until the Cougars scored two runs in the 14th and blanked UH-Hilo in the bottom of the inning.

Joseph Daris and Matt Kimmel each had three hits to lead the Cougars’ 18-hit attack. Jonathan James (2 RBIs) and Sean Nearhoof each had two hits for the Vulcans.

APU reliever Luis Martinez (1-1) got the win. UH-Hilo reliever Jerremy Dela Cruz (3-7) took the loss.

UH-Hilo ends its season on the road with a six-game series at Hawaii Pacific University, May 2-4 on Oahu.
