Kona Vegetarian Society meets
Kona Vegetarian Society will address at its monthly meeting several health-related topics including how to grow sprouts, the Hippocrates diet for a healthy body, heart health, diabetes and how to live a cancer-free life.
Nonvegetarians are welcome. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pottery Terrace, Suite 323. For more information, call 327-0354.
Library book club meets Tuesday
The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. This month’s selection is “Honolulu” by Alan Brennert. This is the richly imagined story of Jin, a young “picture bride” who leaves her native Korea — where girls are so little valued that she is known as Regret — and journeys to Hawaii in 1914 in search of a better life.
Light refreshments will be served.
Community Seder scheduled Tuesday
Congregation Kona Beth Shalom will conduct its annual Community Seder Tuesday, led by Dr. Barry Blum at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The dinner menu will include salad, gefilte fish and a main course of beef brisket (a vegetarian plate is also available) followed by dessert. Matzo, kosher wine, charoseth, eggs and other ceremonial foods will be provided as well on the traditional Seder plates at each table along with Passover Haggadot (booklets). Advance dinner reservations are required to assure adequate seating. Visit konabethshalom.org for more information and reservation form.
Monday evening marks the beginning of the Jewish Festival of Passover. As they have done for millennia, Jews throughout the world celebrate this occasion at Seders in their homes or with their families or friends. The Seder is the ceremonial meal when the story of the Exodus of the ancient Israelites from Egypt is told.
Police planning community meeting
Hawaii Police Department’s Kona community meeting will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kona police station. The purpose of the meeting is to allow the public to meet the police department’s command staff and discuss concerns with the police chief and commanders who oversee police operations in the Kona District.
To aid police commanders in focusing on specific concerns, police request that participation be limited to individuals who live or work in the Kona District.
Those interested in participating but unable to attend may email their concerns or comments to copsysop@co.hawaii.hi.us. For more information, call Capt. Randal Ishii at 326-4646, ext. 299, or stop by the Kona police station.
