Mildred Kahalewai

Mildred “Midge” Kahalewai, 78, of Hilo died April 7, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. April 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call from 8:30 a.m. April 11 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. service, followed by cremation. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by husband, Richard Kahalewai of Hilo; son, Joseph (Sandra) Aguiar of Hilo; daughters, Darlene (George) Kuwada, Marlene (Joshua) Kaaukai and Daveann (Sidney Kamoku) Waters, all of Hilo; brother, Edwin Aguiar of Hilo; sisters, Jan Vierra of Puna, Thelma (William) Kahakua of Mountain View, Carol (Dan) Crall of Florida; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two uncles; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Matthew Therrien

Matthew “Matt” Somchai Therrien, 26, of Hilo died April 6, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born July 21, 1987, in Bangkok, he was an English major and will be honored with a bachelor’s of arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He also served on the board of directors for Hawaii Big Brothers Big Sisters Hilo.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. April 12 at Old Laupahoehoe Gymnasium for a service. Scattering of ashes will follow. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by parents, Mark and Rae Therrien of Laupahoehoe; sisters, Mari (Michelle) Therrien of State Park, Pa., Kate (Claude) Betene of St. Paul, Minn.; special friend, Vicky Chung of San Francisco; three nieces; a nephew.

Juanita Hamada

Juanita Pabro Hamada, 73, of Hilo died March 24, 2014, at the Pohai Malama Hospice of Hilo facility. Born Oct. 28, 1940, in Hawaii, she was a retired housekeeper for Holiday Inn Hotel.

Private family services were held.

She is survived by sons, Clarence (Renae) Salvador Jr. and Jayson (Deanna) Salvador, both of Mountain View, Anthony (Lynn) Salvador Sr. of Kaumana; daughters, Laverne (Gene) Agan and Melissa Hamada, both of Kauai, Daphne Salvador and Yolanda (Gilbert) Hesia, both of Hilo, Melissa Hamada of Maui; brother, Timoteo (Laynette) Pabro Jr. of Kauai; sisters, Corazon (Felipe) Lacaden of Kauai, Li Pabro, Patricia Pabro, Norma Delo Santos, Ana Baldado and Shirl Mae, all of Hilo; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Suzanne Byrne

Suzanne Ely Byrne, 81, of Hilo died March 31, 2014, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Cambridge, Mass., she was a retired teacher, member of the Friends of the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and was active in Friends of Hilo Library and the literacy program.

No services are planned.

She is survived by husband, Ruckman Byrne of Hilo; daughters, Sally (Juaquin) Flores of Valdez, Alaska, Brindan (Michael Sim) Byrne of La Jolla, Calif.; son, William (Margaret) Byrne of Greensboro, N.C., brother, Bidwell (Diana) Ely of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
