Hawaii’s water system explained Monday

Three speakers will explain the geology of Hawaii Island and how it influences access to fresh water at 6 p.m. Monday at North Kohala Library.

John Winter, geologist; Quirino Antonio Jr., manager-chief engineer of the Hawaii County Water Department; and Margaret Wille, County Council member will also explain how our public water system accesses fresh water and delivers it to homes. A question-and-answer session is planned to encourage public discussion. The event is free.

Annual egg rush scheduled April 19

Solid Rock Ministries’ annual egg rush will be held April 19 at Old Kona Airport Park soccer fields. Registration for this free event begins at 7:30 a.m. and the first egg rush begins at 9 a.m. Online registration begins Tuesday at srmkona.com.

Age categories are newborn to 11 years old and children must be present to win. Free refreshments, entertainment and prizes are included.

Healthy breakfast cooking class offered

A class will demonstrate how to make traditional breakfast and brunch recipes using flavorful, healthy, nutrient-rich ingredients from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Waimea Community Center.

Lower in fat and without refined sugar, these recipes can be prepared easily and keep diners fuller longer. Dishes include a strawberry shortcake smoothie, pineapple coconut muffins, tempeh sausage patties and tofu scramble with leeks, mushrooms and goat cheese.

The class fee is $15, which includes recipes and food tasting. Class instructor Landry Fuller is a certified health coach, nutrition counselor and teacher.

Philippines trip discussed during park program

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ranger Adrian Boone will share experiences from his trip to the Philippines during an After Dark in the Park program from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.

Boone’s November trip occurred as Typhoon Haiyan bore down on the island nation. He visited several World Heritage sites, including the 2,000-year-old Banaue rice terraces and Puerta Princesa Subterranean River National Park. The program is free, but park entrance fees apply. A $2 donation helps support After Dark programs.

Kona town meeting slated Tuesday

Mayor Billy Kenoi and his cabinet will discuss current county activities and projects at Community Enterprises’ West Hawaii Community Forum Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Old Kona Airport Park Makaeo pavilion. Pupu and beverages will be served.

Council member Dru Kanuha will also explain issues before the Hawaii County Council. Tami MacAller, West Hawaii coordinator of Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii will describe the work of the coalition at the county and state level and a special presentation will be made to the youth who lobbied Hawaii County Council to raise the minimum age for cigarette purchase to 21.
