Trade winds are forecast to remain elevated through Thursday afternoon, according to forecasters. The winds will accelerate through passes, over ridges and down leeward slopes producing very powerful gusts.
Forecasters are calling for 25 mph to 35 mph east winds with gusts topping 50 mph through 6 p.m. Thursday. The strongest winds are expected between Waimea and Upolu Point as well as in leeward areas of Kohala and Kilauea. Strong winds are also expected near South Point.
The winds are forecast to impact the following areas: Waimea, Honokaa, Waikoloa, Volcano, Pahala, South Point and Hilo.
The winds are expected to steadily subside Thursday night into Friday morning, according to forecasters.
Winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, according to the service.
A wind advisory means that sustained winds of at least 30 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected. Motorists are advised to use extra caution.
