National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu have extended a flood advisory for Hawaii Island until 7:30 p.m. Monday.
At 4:18 p.m., radar showed heavy showers falling at rates of two inches per hour over the lower Hilo and Puna districts. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.
Other areas included in the advisory are: Pepeekeo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pahoa and Mountain View.
The public is cautioned to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, poor braking action and reduced visibility.
