A flood advisory is in effect for Hawaii Island until 5:30 p.m., according to National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu.
At 2:30 p.m., radar showed moderate to heavy rain along the slopes of the Ka’u District, according to forecasters. Rainfall was the heaviest beetween Kapapala Ranch and Kajhuku Ranch. Rain was falling at a rate of one inch per hour.
Forecasters added that the area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.
Other locations included in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Wood Valley, Naalehu, Sea Mountain, Pahala and Volcano, according to the service.
The public is cautioned to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding, according to the service. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
